Rangers close to deal with Bard

Bard was a force in the Boston bullpen for three seasons but had surgery for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Jan. 2 after struggling in winter ball.
"This is the kind of time of year you take chances on guys," general manager Jon Daniels said. "We're taking a chance on a guy who has the pedigree of being one of the best at what he does."
After his three seasons in the Boston bullpen from 2009 to 2011, Boston tried to make him a starter in 2012 but he struggled with command. He walked 43 in 59 1/3 innings in a 5-6 2012 season and pitched just one inning for the Red Sox in 2013. He walked 27 in 15 1/3 innings in the minors and was put on waivers in September.
But the Rangers like the potential Bard has if heâs healthy, which they expect him to be at some point this season. He had a 1.93 ERA in 2010 in 73 appearances and made 70 appearances in 2011.
