Emanuel Vega told The Washington Post he won a bet with his pregnant girlfriend over the right to name their unborn son.
Had the Cowboys won the game, Vega's girlfriend, Marissa Pena, would have named their child Austin Miles Vega after Dallas receiver Miles Austin. Pena and her family are Cowboys fans and Austin is her favorite current player.
Vega, a lifelong Redskins fan living in Tucson, Ariz., wagered the right to name their son after Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Final score: Redskins 38, Cowboys 31. In April, Robert Griffin Vega will be welcomed to the world.
In the time since the loss, Pena has grown used to the idea of her son being named after a Redskins player.
"I actually like it," said Pena, whose due date is April 16. "I didn't at first. I think it just stuck with us. All my sisters call him Little Robby Griff. I don't like the Redskins, but I love his dad, so …"
During the game, the Redskins jumped out to a 28-3 lead by halftime, which had Vega feeling pretty good about his son's future name. But he had to sweat out a Cowboys comeback that saw them pull within a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
Vega figured that his son would become a fan of the team whose player he's named after, so this was a bet that would pay off for a lifetime.
"We've had bets before, where she would wear my Redskins sweater at work if they won," Vega told The Washington Post. "But the name of our son? Determining what fan he would be? It was just insane that they won. That was even bigger than the division title."
