Another Staubach gets a win in Dallas

Jennifer Staubach Gates won election to the Dallas City Council on Saturday.

DALLAS — There's another Staubach pulling out wins in Dallas these days.

Now it's Jennifer Staubach Gates, daughter of former Dallas Cowboys legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Roger Staubach.

Staubach Gates won election to the Dallas City Council on Saturday, besting her opponent by a nearly 2-1 margin.

Staubach Gates looks like her mother, Marianne, but competes like her father in pulling out a seemingly improbable victory.

Her opponent, Leland Burk, is an experienced businessman and investor who had the endorsement of the previous two council members from Dallas' District 13.

Yet Staubach, a community volunteer, overcame her lack of experience in the political arena to win overwhelmingly. Of course, the Staubach name doesn't hurt.

"We're going to do great things," Staubach Gates reportedly told her supporters as she celebrated her victory in her home. "The constituents and voters of District 13 decided they would like a fresh approach and someone who is honest and will work for them."

Roger Staubach has never run for political office, although he would be a shoo-in for Dallas mayor, or even Texas governor. Instead, he's focused on a highly successful career in commercial real estate.

In addition to his name, Staubach's business connections may have come in handy in helping his daughter win office. The Morning News reported the District 13 race to be the most expensive of the city's 14 council races up for election.

District 13 is in North Dallas and includes some of the city's most affluent neighborhoods.

In the final tally, Staubach Gates won 64.4 percent of the vote while her opponent garnered 34.6 percent.

With such a convincing win, there was no need for a Hail Mary. But Roger did give his daughter a congratulatory hug at her election night celebration.
