These athletes (broken up by sport) had everybody talking on Twitter in 2014. Information provided by Twitter.

NFL - 4. Peyton Manning
Like Brady, Denver QB Manning has popularity on his side, so naturally people talk about him. But the Broncos' less-than-par performance in this year's Super Bowl garnered a few mentions as well.

NFL - 3. Johnny Manziel (@jmanziel2)
Johnny Football certainly had a year to remember. From his final days in college, to parties, to the NFL Draft, to more parties and then finally getting a starting nod with the Cleveland Browns, Manziel never disappoints.

How many mentions do you think were because he's an extremely popular player, and how many were because the Los Angeles Lakers aren't doing so well?

Notable athletes not on the list
It's hard to believe these guys didn't make the list (though some were because their sport wasn't covered in the data), but we won't forget about them. Derek Jeter - His farewell tour throughout the 2014 MLB season was the talk of every town. #re2pect Tim Howard (@timhowardgk) - Howard had everybody talking during the World Cup. Michael Phelps (@michaelphelps) - In 2014 Michael Phelps came out of retirement and went to rehab. Adrian Peterson (@adrianpeterson) - Like Rice, Peterson was talked about for all the wrong reasons this season. Brad Keselowski (@keselowski) - Love him or hate him, but people were certainly talking about Keselowski (and his fights) this NASCAR season. Landon Donovan (@landondonovan) - Sports fans were abuzz when Donovan was left off this year's World Cup team, and later when he announced his retirement.
