Survival is key to Hodgson’s plans

The Albion gaffer has discussed his summer transfer plans with

sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth, who has watched four

international games in five days as part of a scouting trip.

Ashworth has proved successful in luring gems to The Hawthorns in

the past, having captured Peter Odemwingie and Somen Tchoyi among

others. Hoffenheim striker Vedad Ibisevic is believed to be on

Hodgson’s wanted list – but the Baggies boss admits everything

depends on which division Albion, who are only one point above the

drop zone, are playing in next season. “This club is very good in

that they have regular meetings and updates on what scouting is

going on and what players are being followed,” Hodgson told the

Birmingham Mail. “They want input from me on profiles of what I

might be looking for for future signings. We have had several

meetings but they have been reasonably general. “We haven’t been

able to specify particular targets, not least of all because we

aren’t sure what division we will be playing in. “There are certain

players we would target without a shadow of a doubt if we can stay

up but those players would drop off our list if we went down

because they would be out of our range.” Hodgson, who faces former

employers Liverpool at The Hawthorns this weekend, added: “It’s a

balancing act at the moment. A lot of good work is being done by

Dan Ashworth, (and scouts) Lee Darnbrough and Bobby Hope. “These

people are working their socks off every day covering as much as

possible with all the scouts we have across Europe. “The scouting

system here is good but when we will be able to sit down and

specify targets and put names to positions, I don’t know. “At the

moment my focus is still mainly on the weekly event of playing in

the Premier League.”
