PSG chairman plans to build stronger team, targets European glory soon

Nasser al-Khelaifi is "convinced" his PSG side will win the Champions League soon.

PSG chairman Nasser al-Khelaifi insists the club will build a stronger team with the aim of winning the UEFA Champions League soon.

The French champions were knocked out of the elite European competition on away goals by Chelsea on Tuesday night following a 2-0 reverse at Stamford Bridge.

Laurent Blanc’s side had held a 3-1 first-leg advantage but went down to a first-half Andre Schurrle strike before fellow substitute Demba Ba got the decisive goal late on.

Following the disappointment, al-Khelaifi has promised the French team’s football fans that the big-spenders will look to improve and are targeting Champions League glory in the near future.

He told L’Equipe: "We were very close to qualifying for the semi-final. The players made a big effort. They gave their very best.

"We were five minutes from the semi-final, but we accept it, that is football.

"We will build a stronger and more experienced team. And I am convinced we will win that trophy soon."

Asked whether manager Blanc will continue at PSG, the chairman replied: "Yes, of course. We have big trust in the whole staff."

While experienced midfielder Thiago Motta also admitted disappointment at not qualifying, he insisted the players had not been afraid of Chelsea going into the game.

"Were we afraid of Chelsea? Not at all. We respected that team because it is a great club with great players and a great coach, but we were not scared," he said, adding PSG must now focus on achieving domestic league and cup honours.

"It is not the right moment to talk now, but rather to remain gathered. We still have the League Cup and Le Championnat to win. We have to remain professional and go on working."
