BARCELONA, Spain — Barcelona says new goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen will miss the opening game of the Spanish league after being ruled unfit to play for two to three weeks because of persistent back pain.

Barcelona says the German goalie was injured during practice on Monday and is still in pain.

Ter Stegen’s injury will mean that fellow new signing Claudio Bravo will start in Barcelona’s Spanish league opener on Aug. 24 against Elche.

Ter Stegen joined Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach on a five-year contract this offseason to help replace veteran Victor Valdes.
