Kingsley Coman injury could spell trouble for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman is out indefinitely after injuring the capsular ligaments in his left ankle during training on Wednesday. The 20-year-old French international went to ground in a heap after a duel with Javi Martinez and left the field on a golf cart.

Bayern didn’t offer how much time they expect Coman to miss, though Sport1 are anticipating a recovery time of up to two months.

"Coman will be sidelined for an indefinite period and is definitely out of the early matches of the new season," Bayern said in a brief statement on their official website.

With the Bundesliga start just nine days away, Bayern are suddenly starting to run out of wingers. Arjen Robben and Douglas Costa remain out for the four-time defending champions, who are getting ready for their DFB-Pokal first-round match on Friday.

Coman’s injury leaves Bayern with just two healthy wingers for at least that game and likely the Bundesliga opener next Friday against Werder Bremen. Franck Ribery and Thomas Mueller both started Sunday’s Supercup against Borussia Dortmund and will have to carry the load until their teammates return. Ribery, however, has also been plagued by injuries the past couple seasons, while Muller is more effective behind the striker. Should Coman miss a couple of months, that's a precarious situation at a position considered one of the strongest on the club.

Coman, who scored 6 goals and added 12 assists last season after joining Bayern on loan from Juventus, is expected to be an important role player for Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, and the club is widely expected to make his transfer permanent. Bayern secured an option to buy the Frenchman for €21 million at the end of his two-year loan.
