Garry Monk has a brilliant strategy to win: don't allow goals

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:43 p.m. ET

Leeds manager Garry Monk was disappointed to see his side fall, 3-1, on Saturday and he has a fix to the team's ills -- don't give up any goals.

You see, if they just wouldn't allow the other team to score, they would win.

"If not for the goals we conceded we would have won the game, definitely," Monk said after the match.

Let's do the math for a second here; if you take away Nottingham Forest's three goals, they have zero and then Leeds have one, which makes the score 1-0 and, yep, the math checks out. Monk's Leeds would have won if they did not give up those goals.

Monk's comments came as part of his ruing their sloppy defending, which allowed the goals, and obviously was not a lesson in math. He was simply upset with his team allowing three goals he thinks they shouldn't have. But in that came a money quote.

Ah, the joys of live interviews. And to be fair, "if they don't score, we'll win" is a good strategy, Garry.
