BRASILIA, Brazil —

Christen Press scored four goals and Carli Lloyd had a hat trick as the United States women’s soccer team routed Argentina 7-0 in the four-team Brasilia Tournament on Thursday, keeping alive its hopes of reaching the final.

The United States women’s national team will need some help from host Brazil, which has to beat China in the late match at the Mane Garrincha Stadium. A draw would eliminate the Americans. Brazil was already guaranteed a spot in Sunday’s final, and was expected to rest of its starters against China.

The tournament serves as preparation for the 2015 World Cup in Canada. Brazil, China and the U.S. have qualified.

The U.S. came into the match knowing it had to score a lot to surpass China in goal differential. The Chinese defeated Argentina 6-0 after an opening 1-1 draw with the Americans. The U.S. relinquished a 2-0 lead in a 3-2 loss to Brazil on Sunday, when five-time world player of the year Marta scored three times.

The U.S. controlled the action from the start on Thursday. Argentina barely made it near the goal of Alyssa Naeher, who was playing for regular starter Hope Solo.

American substitute Sydney Leroux was red-carded in the 89th after a ball dispute with an Argentine defender.
