Brown, Robinson quit England duty despite recalls

Defender Wes Brown has joined goalkeeper Paul Robinson in
retiring from England’s national soccer team. His decision comes a
day after he was recalled to the squad.

The 30-year-old players missed the World Cup but were summoned
to the team by coach Fabio Capello for Wednesday’s exhibition game
against Hungary. The Football Association said Sunday that Brown
went to the team hotel to tell Capello.

Robinson was recalled after Capello decided to drop 40-year-old
David James and Robert Green. Green’s blunder allowed the U.S. to
score in a World Cup opener that ended 1-1.

Robinson said earlier in the day he didn’t want to be England’s
third- or fourth-choice goalkeeper. Robinson was England’s top
goalie at the 2006 World Cup.
