RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) The giant escaped alive – just barely.
Brazil has beaten Chile 3-2 on penalties in its Round of 16 World Cup soccer match.
But the brutally close contest put the nation of 200 million into a state of collective suffering on Saturday. The scrappy Chileans just kept battling the globe’s soccer powerhouse every step of the way.
Ana Paulo Romero was watching her beloved Brazil from afar inside Rio’s Maracana soccer stadium on a giant screen. Like seemingly all Brazilians, she’s a demanding supporter and expects more convincing wins.
”I sweated a lot!” she said. She criticized Brazil – ”they barely created any goal opportunities.”
Romero added: ”Winning by penalties isn’t what we Brazilians want to see.”
