Bradley Wright-Phillips set yet another MLS goal scoring record

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:39 p.m. ET

Bradley Wright-Phillips's two goals on Sunday did more than extend his lead atop this season's MLS goal scoring charts -- they made history. The New York Red Bulls striker now has 20 goals on the campaign, making him the first player in the history of the league to score 20 goals in two different seasons.

For all of the league's many wonderful goal scorers, nobody else has bagged 20 in two season. Remarkably, Wright-Phillips has done it in just three full seasons in MLS.

Wright-Phillips joined the Red Bulls for the finish of the 2013 season. In 2014, he took the league by storm, tying the MLS single-season record with 27 goals. Last season, he "slumped" and scored "only" 17 times. But this season he's back at the 20-goal mark and now he has an incredible 65 goals in 103 matches for New York. That's also an MLS record for most goals in a three-season span, with the rest of this season still to go.

Not coincidentally, the Red Bulls have had the best years in club history since signing Wright-Phillips. When he joined the team in 2013, he helped New York win their first ever major trophy, the Supporters' Shield. Last season, he helped them take the Shield again and the Red Bulls currently sit just two points out of first place in the Eastern Conference as they chase that elusive first ever MLS Cup.
