Austria Vienna fined for fans’ behavior

UEFA has ordered Austria Vienna to play two European games in an

empty stadium – one of them deferred – and has fined the club

20,000 Euros for its supporters’ actions during a Europa League

group match in December.

The game between Austria and Athletic Bilbao was interrupted

in the second half for about 20 minutes when Austria Vienna fans

launched fireworks and ran onto the pitch after their team fell 2-0

behind. The Spanish club won the match 3-0.

Austria director Markus Kraetschmer on Friday called the

punishment “draconic,” adding that “we’ll await the detailed

written verdict by UEFA before deciding if we accept it or appeal

against it.”

Austria finished bottom of the table in Group L, while Bilbao

and Werder Bremen advanced.
