TOKYO (AP) Former Australia coach Graham Arnold has resigned as coach of J-League side Vegalta Sendai after a winless start to the season.
The Sendai-based team announced the move on its official website on Wednesday.
Arnold was the first Australian-born coach to take over a Japanese team but leaves after the team had four losses and two draws, leaving it second from bottom in the 18-team division.
The 50-year-old was head coach of the Australian national team from 2007-08 after working on the coaching staff under Guus Hiddink. He was in charge at A-League club Central Coast Mariners since 2010 and led them to the league championship last season.
Vegalta announced that Arnold will be replaced by Susumu Watanabe, who served as an assistant coach with the team since 2005.
