RUMOR: QPR to Benfica // Likelihood: It’s happening // Incredibly, QPR are paying Cesar £100,000 ($167,000) a week not to play for QPR. That is not the model used by most business schools, but if someone wants to pay me that amount not to work … please send me a mail. However, it looks like the Brazil goalkeeper is finally leaving Loftus Road, although QPR and Benfica will split his wage bill.

RUMOR: Napoli to Arsenal // Likelihood: Hmmm … // Wenger says he does not need any more attacking players, but he also once claimed not to know who Santi Cazorla was days before he signed for Arsenal. The Gunners have been linked with a short-term move for Chile forward Vargas, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Valencia. He hardly set the world alight there, and as we rule the school when it comes to rumors, we’re giving this piece of gossip a C-minus. See me. In red pen.

RUMOR: Manchester City to Roma // Likelihood: Forget about it // Jovetic hardly set the world alight last season, but that hasn’t stopped Roma from sounding out City about a potential season-long loan for the Montenegrin. What are the chances? Between slim and slight. Jovetic looked sharp in preseason, and while his performance at Newcastle merited a ‘work in progress’ appraisal, let’s not forget Negredo is still out injured and Aguero is still not 100 percent recovered from a groin injury. Stay loose, Stevan, game time is coming your way at City.

RUMOR: Olympiakos to Arsenal // Likelihood: A possibility // Following Thomas Vermaelen’s move to Barcelona, the Gunners are in the market for a center-back, and they may have found the ideal solution. Manolas was a target for both Juventus and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, although the Bundesliga champions are thought to have turned their attention to other targets (more on that, later). Manolas does the simple things well, and at £8 million ($13.38 million) the price is right for a man like Wenger who likes to look after the dimes.

RUMOR: PSG to Premier League // Likelihood: Unlikely // So, Lavezzi is supposedly back on the radar of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool because his contract negotiations have broken down. Really? Mourinho told us that he has already concluded his transfer business, Liverpool are looking for a striker to replace Suarez rather than a winger/forward and Arsenal have already splashed out a shed load on Alexis Sanchez. Juventus are favorites to sign him should he leave PSG, but with an injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic this is just fiction not fact.

RUMOR: Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United // Likelihood: Deal finally on // The rollercoaster ride of Rojo’s protracted move to United finally looks like grinding to a halt at the Old Trafford bus stop. Rojo is back in training having apologized to Sporting for going on strike, but it looks like a deal has finally been struck which would involve Nani returning to the Portuguese club on loan. Rojo can now continue to follow United’s players on Instagram without embarrassing himself.

RUMOR: Real Madrid to Premier League // Likelihood: We’re not buying it // Khedira’s agent is supposed to be in London to hold talks with Arsenal and Chelsea about a potential move. If you’re feeling sinister we’d say that sounds like an auction, but in any case Carlo Ancelotti has put the stoppers on such a move by saying the transfer window is closed for Real Madrid. Looks like someone has spent money on flights for nothing.

RUMOR: Roma to Manchester United // Likelihood: Trumped? // I could be dreaming, but just when it seemed as though Van Gaal had solved his center-back crisis something gets in the way. A few days ago the papers were full of reports of United’s £24 million ($40 million) bid for the Morocco defender but now there seems to be a problem. What could it be? Is it that Bayern Munich have stepped in and beaten United to him? Watch this space.

RUMOR: Real Madrid to Manchester United // Likelihood: Who knows? // Manchester United’s woeful display against Swansea has already dashed expectations of a title charge this season and highlighted how desperately Louis van Gaal needs high-quality recruits to launch a top-four challenge. (United fans talking about the title a week ago have already gone into hiding). Van Gaal has reportedly told Ed Woodward to get Di Maria, who would cost $100 million when you add wages to his transfer fee. Ancelotti has cast doubt on the future of Di Maria by saying he does not know what the Argentina winger has decided. The rumors seem to surface around Di Maria feeling under appreciated (read: more money, please).

RUMOR: Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich // Likelihood: We’re in the dark // Borussia Dortmund’s hatred of Bayern Munich moved up a few notches a couple of weeks ago when the club’s chief executive, Hans-Joachim Watzke, accused Karl-Heinz Rummenigge of trying to unsettle Reus. Well, now it’s the turn of Bayern’s honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to give Watzke another nice day for a sulk by saying “I can imagine Reus at Bayern very well.” As an afterthought he says Reus could also end up at Manchester United or Real Madrid. Interestingly, one bookmaker has Reus at very short odds to join Atletico Madrid this month.
