The transfer window is a testy time for managers and players. New Manchester United manager David Moyes is already getting tired of answering questions about the future of Wayne Rooney and his mood can’t have improved with the news he has lost out to Bayern Munich in the battle for Barcelona star Thiago Alcantara. With all this in mind the kind folks generating the Rumor Mill have decided to give Rooney a rest this week – but beware Moyesy, we may well be back next week. Spurs are also being driven to distraction by the games Real Madrid are playing in a bid to bring Gareth Bale to the Bernabeu, while Luis Suarez is digging his heels in over an exit from Liverpool. We’ve found the perfect artist to help pepper the best of this week’s gossip. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke is also annoyed and has taken his side project Atoms for Peace off Spotify and blasted the music streaming service for paying new acts “nothing.” That’s not quite how he phrased it, but this is a family show! Ten tracks by the truly great Radiohead are in this week’s mix.
Christian Eriksen, Ajax
RUMOR: AJAX TO LIVERPOOL LIKELIHOOD: Could be a goer It will be lucky team that lands Christian Eriksen, Danish playmaker that has been given the green light by Frank de Boer to leave the club. The Ajax coach admits he would like Eriksen to stay at the club for a few more years but that a final decision is with the player. He said: “If he feels good going to Liverpool then it is up to him. We realize the interest in this kind of player is huge. And I can also understand he wants to take another step in his career. I can’t stop him.” Although these words sound like an invite to go and join the Reds no offer has been made by any club, including Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool. Hurry up Brendan before it’s too late!
Christian Benteke, Aston Villa
RUMOR: ASTON VILLA TO TOTTENHAM LIKELIHOOD: More than probable Benteke’s move to Tottenham seems to be in limbo, but this is one deal that is likely to ahead over the summer transfer window. The Belgian has handed in a transfer request and if reports are to be believed he wants the deal tied up by Thursday. Villa supposedly wants £25 million ($32.5 million) for the striker, but Spurs hasn’t even made a formal offer yet – although it is thought to have proposed £20 million to test the water. We’ll see.
Alvaro Negredo, Sevilla
RUMOR: SEVILLA TO MANCHESTER CITY LIKELIHOOD: Good chance Feet certainly seem to be dragging over the imminent arrival of Alvaro Negredo, but all the signs are that the Sevilla forward will be at the Etihad next season. Hi coach, Unai Emery, has already admitted that “it would be best for everyone” if Negredo left the club. Manchester City has not been mentioned by name but it apperars to be the only club in the running and there will be no surprises if that’s where he ends up. City is also thought to be interested in Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic. Try squeezing those two in with Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko every week!
Daniele de Rossi, AS Roma
RUMOR: ROMA TO CHELSEA LIKELIHOOD: In the balance The media is sending out mixed messages when it comes to the future of Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi. On the one hand the press are reporting that Chelsea’s hopes of landing the Italy international are fading after Roma’s head coach Rudi Garcia stated he does not want to sell his prize asset. On the other, Roma is in talks with PSV Eindhoven about the transfer of Kevin Strootman – De Rossi’s potential replacement. It’s hard to gauge whether Chelsea is optimistic or not about landing the 28-year-old midfielder, however they won’t fail for lack of trying .
Gareth Bale, Tottenham
RUMOR: TOTTENHAM TO REAL MADRID LIKELIHOOD: Not this season Little by little Real Madrid is chipping away in its bid to sign Tottenham forward Gareth Bale. The latest dirty trick involves reserving the number 11 shirt for the Wales international just in case he signs and even reportedly mocking up a picture of him in a Real Madrid shirt. We haven’t noticed Bale cracking under all this psychological pressure and Spurs certainly don’t want to play ball so as much as it would be a step up for Bale if he moved to the Bernabeu for now he is staying at White Hart Lane, where good times seem ahead.
Luis Suarez, Liverpool
RUMOR: LIVERPOOL TO ARSENAL LIKELIHOOD: Liverpool are prepared for trench warfare Luis Suarez has done himself no favors by his comments at the weekend in which he inferred that the real reason he wants to leave Liverpool is that he wants to play at the “highest level” and that he has “suffered” not being in with a chance of winning the Premier League. Oh, we thought he wanted to move because he was being hounded by the British media! Whatever the reason we anticipate a monumental sulk from the Uruguayan if he doesn’t get his way but the club he has been linked with certainly falls into the bracket of underachievers! Arsenal hasn’t won a trophy in eight years although admittedly they have qualified for every Champions League since 2000. The Reds don’t want to lose him and we expect a big battle over the summer.
Edinson Cavani, Napoli
RUMOR: NAPOLI TO PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN LIKELIHOOD: The way is clear Everyone at PSG seems to be pretty confident that Cavani will be at the club for the start of the season, although whether Ibrahimovic will also be there remains a different story. I might be wrong, but it seems a waste of time spending the summer chasing Cavani if you end up losing the player that virtually secured the Ligue 1 title for you last season. On the Cavani front, it now seems inevitable that the Uruguayan will be playing in France soon as Manchester City and Chelsea turn their attentions elsewhere.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, PSG
RUMOR: PSG TO MANCHESTER CITY LIKELIHOOD: Maybe not to City, but a move could be on Make no bones about it, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a moody sort as his dressing-room row with sporting director Leonardo last season highlighted. The Swede has reportedly already fallen out with new coach Laurent Blanc over the potential arrival of Edinson Cavani from Napoli, which has prompted the inevitable rumors about an exit from the French capital. Interestingly, Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has said that Ibrahimovic will not play with Cavani next season because “he’s already been promised to other horizons.” City may not be his destination, but we wait with bated breath to see what happens next.
Cesc Fabregas, Barcelona
RUMOR: BARCELONA TO MANCHESTER UNITED LIKELIHOOD: Unlikely Now that David Moyes has been left high and dry by Thigo Alcantara’s decision to shun Manchester United in favor of a move to Bayern Munich, it seems attention has been turned elsewhere. Interestingly, Moyes revealed at the weekend that there is no budget at United – you just go and get who you want. Words like these have inevitably led to Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale being linked with the club. However, the man they want is former Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas. United has made what seems on the surface to be a bid to get the ball rolling rather than a serious offer, if the figure of 30 million euros ($39 million) is to be believed. Barca say the player is “not transferable” and as far as we’re concerned, Fabregas is where he wants to be despite clicking ‘like’ on an Instagram picture of him kissing an Arsenal shirt over the weekend.
Clint Dempsey, Tottenham
RUMOR: LEAVING TOTTENHAM LIKELIHOOD: Staying at White Hart Lane A story emerged last week that United States international Clint Dempsey had been transfer-listed by Spus, so is the former Fulham man about to start earning is dollars and cents elsewhere? According to his agent he‘s not, despite interest from West Brom. Lyle Yorks says he has been in constant communication with Tottenham and insists they are happy with Dempsey, and that the feeling is mutual. Yorks admits things could change if a club came in with a big offer, but says Spurs are not actively looking to sell him. One for the garbage bin we think.
