Toronto FC finally won a playoff game. In fact, they won several and made it to penalty kicks of MLS Cup, but they fell just short of their ultimate goal. What do they do to build on their best season ever?
Add some wingback depth
Toronto FC benefitted from their switch to a 3-5-2 and figure to use it as their primary setup next season. But three-man backlines are dependent on good wingback play and while TFC have two reliable ones in Justin Morrow and Steven Beitashour, but they'll need a couple more if they want to effectively play three at the back for a while.

Make sure they're set at centerback
The downside of playing with three centerbacks is you need more of them. TFC have a solid starting three, but they need at least two more, if not three others, that they can lean on too.

Renegotiate Will Johnson's contract
Johnson was a good player for TFC in 2016 and is a great leader, but he's a reserve and making nearly $400,000. That's way too much and while Toronto are hardly up against the cap, they need to lower Johnson's cap hit.

Get Sebastian Giovinco some help
Giovinco is the best player in MLS so you can excuse Toronto FC for putting so much on him, but they need to add another creative player. Jozy Altidore has already hinted at the need for another playmaker, even if it's just off the bench. It can be a central player or a dynamic winger, but TFC need to add another creative option to offer a spark so it's not always all on Giovinco.

Keep building excitement
Finally, TFC gave their fans something to cheer for. This is a group that has supported the team from Year 1 and deserved the chance at MLS Cup. The team even added more fans as the run to the final got people onto the bandwagon. Now they need to make sure they keep winning and keep rewarding these fans. They have something special going.
