COLLEGIATE COMPETITOR, INTERNATIONAL TOUR PRO

A native of Atlanta, Ga., Michaels grew up a serious tennis player and didn’t begin playing competitive golf until his junior year of high school. He initially went to college as a student at Wake Forest University, before walking on to the golf team. Michaels transferred to Vanderbilt University in the spring of 1999 and joined the school’s golf program in time for the 1999 season. At Vanderbilt, Michaels contributed immediately for the Commodores, turning in an excellent season that saw him rank third on the team in stroke average (his 74.48 narrowly trailed then-teammate and current PGA Tour-standout Brandt Snedeker at 74.03), post two Top-10 finishes and become the inaugural recipient of the program’s Craig Rudolph Memorial Cup, now given annually to the team’s top player. After college, Michaels spent two years on the Hooters Tour and six years as a member of both the Asian and European Tours, claiming three tournament titles, including the Philippine Open, Asia’s oldest championship, a victory he notched in just his second start on the circuit.

ENTERING THE BROADCAST REALM

After several serious injuries derailed his competitive career in 2009, Michaels returned to the States and made his debut as a broadcaster, co-hosting the radio show, “Talking Golf: Virgil and Ned’s Tour Spin” on 104.5 The Zone-Nashville, what is consistently one of the highest-rated in-market sports radio stations in the country. In 2012, he made his first venture into the digital landscape, joining PGATour.com as the co-host of its weekday morning web-program, “Golf Talk America,” and works with PGA Tour Entertainment as a co-host on the “Live @” series. Michaels continues his radio work for The Zone, now serving as the host of the “Global Golf Radio” show on Wednesday evenings throughout the year. He has also received instructor certification and for the past six years, has taught at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., while also owning and operating 360 Junior Golf, a program for high school golfers seeking to continue their careers at the collegiate level.
