Russia’s Ustyugov wins cross-country World Cup sprint race

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) Russian cross-country skier Sergei Ustyugov won a World Cup sprint race on Sunday.

Ustyugov, who was fifth in men’s sprint at the Sochi Winter Olympics, edged runner-up Finn Haagen Krogh of Norway by 0.59 seconds over the 1.6-kilometer course.

Third-placed Sindre Bjoernestad Skar of Norway was just 0.18 ahead of another Russian, Alexei Petukhov, for the final podium place.

Ustyugov moved to second in the season-long sprint standings, behind Paal Golberg of Norway.

Overall World Cup leader Martin Johnsrud Sundby of Norway did not score points Sunday.

Earlier, Maiken Caspersen Falla won a Norwegian duel in the women’s race from Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg, who edged Hanna Falk of Sweden into third.

Oestberg now leads the World Cup overall standings, having won Saturday’s 15-kilometer freestyle race.

Jessica Diggins of the United States placed fifth Sunday, and stands seventh overall.
