Gebremeskel wins Carlsbad 5000 record fifth time

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia has won the Carlsbad 5000 for a record fifth time, completing the road race in 13 minutes, 27 seconds.

The 27-year-old Gebremeskel, who also won Carlsbad from 2011-14, finished 20 seconds ahead of American Paul Chelimo.

Gebremeskel won the silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the 2012 Olympics. Chelimo was the Olympic silver medalist in the 5,000 meters last year.

Sam McEntee of Australia was third in 13:51.

Gebremeskel opened a big gap at the 3,000-meter mark. He held up all five fingers as he crossed the finish line to signify his five Carlsbad victories.

Viola Lagat of Kenya won the women's race in 15:35, beating Shannon Rowbury of the United States by 10 seconds. Third-place finisher Aisha Praught of Jamaica clocked the same time as Rowbury (15:36).
