Freshman Smith in mix to be Wildcats’ starting tight end

By LARRY VAUGHT

Kentucky has lacked a consistent playmaker at tight end the last two seasons after Jacob Tamme, an all-SEC pick, left for the NFL. However, freshman Alex Smith of Cincinnati could help solve that dilemma this season.

He originally signed with North Carolina State, graduated early and planned to enroll in January. When an eligibility issue prevented that, he switched his commitment to UK, moved to Lexington to be around the program and started summer school in June.

The 6-5 Smith is eager to show what he can do.
