Four Gophers Stay Alive on Team USA Roster

Lucia leads squad into key matchups: Gopher head coach Don Lucia, who is also bench boss for USA Hockey’s 2014 U.S. National Junior Hockey Team, has completed a major roster trim as the team prepares for a round of international competition. The roster has now shrunk from 44 players to 31, including four current or incoming Gophers. Next up: matchups against Canada, Finland and Sweden.
Minnesota defenseman Brady Skjei is still on the roster as is incoming freshman blueliner Michael Brodzinski. Also still on the team are forwards Hudson Fasching and Taylor Cammarata, also incoming freshmen.
Lucia made clear that the roster is by no means locked in for the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmo, Sweden, December 26 – January 5. “Even though some kids are getting sent home doesn’t mean they aren’t candidates to make the team,” Lucia said. “Certain guys have played their way to a spot to be kept and other guys we just want to get a better read.”
Camp began with 18 forwards, ten defensemen and three goalies.
