An Indian teenager died Sunday after being beaten by a group of boys when he dropped a catch during a game of cricket earlier this month.

Remembering the many athletes sports lost way too soon.

Saif Ali Shaikh, 16, was returning from visiting a mosque in Mumbai on March 2 when he joined a game of cricket with some boys outside, officials said.

After dropping a catch, however, the boys on his team got angry and started hitting him with cricket bats, The Times of India reported Monday.

He was taken to a local hospital suffering severe injuries to his hands, legs and shoulders. He died in the hospital on Sunday, after his wounds became seriously infected, officials said.

Authorities have not yet charged anyone over the attack.
