Lara Gut of Switzerland won her second World Cup event of the season, taking the season-opening downhill Friday in a race Lindsey Vonn skipped to rehab her right knee.

Gut was nearly flawless along the new Beaver Creek course, finishing in 1 minute, 41.26 seconds. She beat Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein by 0.47 seconds. Elena Fanchini of Italy finished third.

Gut had the fastest time in two of three training sessions this week on the demanding course.

Vonn didn't attend the race because watching would be "too hard on me." She was planning a return for this race after tearing ligaments in her knee during an accident at the worlds in February. She was on target, too, before her crash during training last week.
