Wilkinson advances to Olympics

St. Peters, MO (Sports Network) - Laura Wilkinson earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic Diving Team Sunday by winning the 10-meter platform competition at the U.S. trials. Wilkinson's first-place point total of 878.85 bettered Brittany Viola's mark of 836.40. The 17-year-old Viola, who just finished her junior year of high school in Orlando, Florida, is the daughter of former major league pitcher Frank Viola.

Wilkinson, who earned a gold medal in the event at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia , received all 9s with the exception of one 8.5 in her final dive to seal the victory.
