Manchester United says Javier Hernandez will not play for Mexico at the London Olympics because the forward needs to rest for the Premier League season.

Hernandez had been among the initial picks for the Olympics as one of Mexico's three players over the 23-year-old limit, but United manager Alex Ferguson says the club has agreed with the Mexican Football Federation that the forward is ''going to get the requisite rest that he needs to perform in the Premier League.''

Hernandez will play in Mexico's two qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup on June 8 and 12. Then he will have a full offseason's rest for the first time in three years before the start of his third season at United the weekend of Aug. 18.

Mexico's opening match at the Olympics is July 26 against South Korea.
