The International Olympic Committee has hired Richard Budgett, a British doctor and former rowing gold medalist, to be its Medical and Scientific Director.

The IOC says Budgett will join on Oct. 1 after completing his duties as chief medical officer for the local organizing committee of the London Olympics.

He will replace Patrick Schamasch, who is retiring after 27 years with the IOC.

Budgett won Olympic gold in Britain's coxed four boat, which included rowing great Steve Redgrave, at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

He was the British team's chief medical officer at each Summer and Winter Games from 1996-2008.
