Four-time Olympic medalist Brendan Hansen came out of a 2 1/2-year retirement to try to make this summer's London games. At the Indianapolis Grand Prix on Thursday, the old man (he is all of 30) finished fourth in the 200-meter breaststroke final at the Indiana University Natatorium.
The main attraction
All eyes were on swimming mega-star Michael Phelps on Thursday, and he did not disappoint with a gold-medal swim in the 100-meter butterfly. He also finished second in the 100 freestyle.
Nathan Adrian found the key to beating Michael Phelps: split your trunks. While getting on the blocks moments before Thursday's 100-meter freestyle final, Adrian felt his trunks rip. But rather than lose focus, Adrian dove in and turned in a time of 48.62 seconds, .12 seconds better than Phelps to take the gold.
Lochte locked out
Ryan Lochte won the 100-meter final on Thursday — the consolation final. He finished ninth overall with a time of 52.32, which would have gotten silver in the championship final.
Dana Vollmer won Thursday's 100-meter butterfly final with a time of 57.73 seconds, nearly two full seconds ahead of second-place Claire Donahue.
