Injuries piling up for Reds

Heisey had a mild left groin strain.
"I felt a little tightness when I scored in the fourth inning," he said. "They wanted me to take the rest of the day. Hopefully, I'll be OK. I've been dealing with groin thing this year. I felt it little more on that play. They can be tricky. They wanted to be safe, rather than sorry."
Mesoraco felt something in his side.
"I think it was a cramp from being sick," he said. "I pounded the fluids, but I was pretty worn out."
The Reds have played the last eight games without Drew Stubbs, who is dealing with a slightly strained oblique. He hit off a tee Thursday. It was the first time he's swung the bat since the injury happened on June 5. He also did some agility work.
Stubbs, like Mesoraco, was among the players dealing with the flu-like illness.
"What I did (Thursday), I was supposed to do Tuesday," he said. "But with being sick and feeling weak, we delayed the schedule."
The soonest he will take batting practice is Saturday.
--2B Brandon Phillips went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. He's hitting .356 with nine home runs and 30 RBI in 38 games against the Cleveland Indians, his old team.
--RHP Mike Leake went 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He is pitching two days after dealing with a flu-like sickness. He threw 84 pitches.
--RF Jay Bruce played 35 games in center in 2008. He's ready to play there if needed because of the injuries to Drew Stubbs and Chris Heisey.
--3B Scott Rolen will do a brief rehab assignment at Class AAA Louisville. He'll play Friday and Saturday. If all goes well, he'll join the team Monday in Cleveland and be activated.
--OF Kristopher Negron recorded his first hit in the majors Thursday. "It's always good to get the first one," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Major leaguers never forget that one."
BY THE NUMBERS: 17 -- That's how many hits the Reds had Thursday -- a season-high.
QUOTE TO NOTE: That was a gutsy performance by Leake. We tried to stay with him as long as we could. I was trying to get him the win. He came close. I always try to get my pitcher the win. But we had to get the team the win." -- Manager Dusty Baker on Mike Leake's outing.
--OF Chris Heisey (mild left groin strain) left the June 14 game. It is not believed to be serious.
--C Devin Mesoraco (sore side, flu) left the June 14 game. He won't play June 15, and he might try to take batting practice June 16.
--CF Drew Stubbs (strained oblique, flu) was injured swinging at a pitch June 5 and then had the flu, and he has not played since June 5. He is day-to-day.
--LHP Bill Bray (strained left groin) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Louisville on April 29, but he moved back to extended spring training in Goodyear, Ariz., after one outing. He resumed throwing May 28, and he threw a bullpen session June 1. He made rehab appearances for Class A Dayton on June 9 and June 11.
--RHP Nick Masset (right shoulder inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 26. He threw on flat ground May 24 for the first time and now is throwing 120 feet. There is no timetable for his return.
--3B Scott Rolen (strained left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list May 12. On June 6, he took batting practice on the field for the first time since he was injured. He will do a brief rehab assignment at Class AAA Louisville June 15 and 16. If all goes well, he'll join the team June 18 in Cleveland and be activated.
--RHP Ryan Madson (Tommy John surgery in April 2012) went on the 60-day disabled list April 4. He is out for the season.
