Nick Harney, a Cleveland native and major contributor to three very good University of Akron teams over the last three seasons, will play his final college basketball season at Fairmont State, a Div. II school in West Virginia.
The 6’8 Harney can play inside and out. He averaged 8.8 points and 3.4 rebounds over his Akron career, with his best season coming as the Zips won the MAC regular season and tournament championships in 2012-13 and went to the NCAA tournament.
He was suspended last February in the midst of his best individual stretch of the season for violating team rules.
Harney was listed as a senior by Akron last season; he was a fourth-year student who didn’t play basketball his first season as a non-qualifier. He got his academics in order and met graduation requirements in four years, giving him a fourth year of basketball eligibility.
Fairmont State is coached by Jerrod Calhoun, a graduate of Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School and a former player at Cleveland State.
