ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dusty Baker was feeling nostalgic when the Cincinnati Reds arrived at Rangers Ballpark.
Baker remembered being part of major league baseball’s first regular-season interleague game, managing San Francisco to a 4-3 win at Texas on June 12, 1997. The Reds manager also had thoughts of the late Johnny Oates, his former teammate and former Rangers manager.
Baker got a call Friday from John Burkett, the winning pitcher for the Giants in Baker’s managerial debut on April 6, 1993, at St. Louis. Burkett later pitched for the Rangers and still lives in Texas.
Baker’s last trip to Rangers Ballpark was with the Giants in 2001.
Before the three-game series starting Friday night, Cincinnati’s only other trip to Rangers Ballpark was in 2002, Baker’s last season with the Giants.
