Ben Tate stirs up Twitter with Indians ticket offer

New Browns running back invites 44 fans to join him at the ball park, where he will throw out the first pitch Tuesday night.

With both the NHL and NBA playoffs on hold as they gear up for final series, Monday night was as slow a sports night as there has been in quite a while, particularly in Ohio with the Reds having the night off. After the Indians dispatched the Red Sox 3-2 behind a dominant Justin Masterson, where were Buckeye State fans to turn for sports-related entertainment on the second night of June?

Never fear -- Ben Tate came to the rescue with a deal even better than meeting him at McDonald's.

The 25-year-old running back, who signed a free-agent deal with the Browns in March, is scheduled to throw out the first pitch at the Indians game on Tuesday night, and when he announced to his 107,000 Twitter followers shortly before 10 p.m. he would take 44 fans to the game with him, hilarity ensued.

The first Tweet received nearly 300 favorite and more than 150 retweets within a couple of hours, and Tate shared some of the winners. Not a bad way to endear yourself to fans in a new town, eh?

While it looks like Mr. Tate was accommodating to a variety of types of requests, he did draw the line somewhere.
