The Twins on Thursday signed left-hander Rafael Perez to a minor league contract, the team announced. The 30-year-old Perez will report to camp in Fort Myers, Fla., on Saturday.
Perez missed most of the 2012 season with a left shoulder injury and eventually had surgery on the shoulder in September. He spent his entire seven-year major league career with the Cleveland Indians, making 338 relief appearances. He posted a 3.64 ERA with 268 strikeouts in 329 innings.
While used only as a reliever in the majors with Cleveland, Perez also made 77 starts in the minor leagues. Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony told MLB.com that the team plans to stretch Perez out with the possibility of making him a starter.
