MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins on Tuesday acquired
left-handed pitcher Kris Johnson from Pittsburgh. In exchange, the Twins sent
pitcher Duke Welker — originally acquired by the Pirates in October — back to
The 29-year-old Johnson made his major league debut last
year with the Pirates and appeared in four games, including one start. He was
0-2 with a 6.10 ERA in 10 ⅓ innings. Johnson had better success in the minors
in 2013, going 10-4 with a 2.39 ERA in 26 games with Triple-A Indianapolis.
Welker, 27, was a part of the trade that sent Justin Morneau
to Pittsburgh in exchange for Alex Presley and a player to be named later.
Welker officially became the last part of the deal on Oct. 5.
