News: Crosby (undisclosed) was held out of practice for precautionary reasons Saturday.
Impact: Crosby was held out after reportedly having a good practice Friday. The star doesn't appear to be in danger of missing any regular season time barring a setback or another injury.

News: Crosby skated with his teammates Friday when the Pittsburgh Penguins opened training camp. The team had announced on Thursday that Crosby would be held out of the early days of training camp with an unspecified minor injury.
Impact: The reigning NHL MVP said he was cleared to practice on Friday morning and wasted little time jumping onto the ice at Consol Energy Center. He skated for about 50 minutes before leaving. The 27-year-old declined to elaborate on how he was injured, saying only that it occurred a few days before camp began.

News: Crosby (undisclosed) practiced Friday, despite an early report that stated the MVP would be held out of the beginning of training camp, ABC News reports.
Impact: Not only did Crosby practice, but he did not wear a red non-contact jersey, and participated in most of the practice. If Crosby is still battling an injury, it appears that it is not serious enough to keep him off the ice. If he is already healthy enough to participate in training camp, expect Crosby to be near 100 percent when the regular season rolls around, though we'll place the caveat that obviously something's been bugging him to some degree - such as a shoulder injury or minor soreness from his wrist issues last season. Or it could be some combo of both, that again, is not enough to keep him off the ice.

News: Kapanen (broken finger) has been cleared for the start of the training camp, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: The broken finger kept Kapanen out of a recent prospects tournament, but the extra time off was all he needed to return to full health. The Penguins' first-round draft choice this past June, Kapanen will have a shot at claiming a roster spot out of training camp.

News: Maatta will take limited contact at Thursday's practice.
Impact: The Penguins won't let Maatta go full bore right away as he continues to recover from surgery, but the fact that he's on the ice suggests his recovery is going swimmingly. Once thought to be at risk of missing the start of the season, Maatta appears more likely than not to be in the lineup for the Penguins' Oct. 9 opener against the Ducks.

News: Crosby will miss the beginning of training camp with an undisclosed injury, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: Crosby played with an injured wrist toward the end of last season, and it's also possible he's suffering from another ailment, such as a shoulder injury. It appears he'll be able to open the regular season, but there's an added measure of risk with Crosby after he decided against summer wrist surgery and now has this additional mystery injury.

News: Malkin will be held out of the early stages of training camp after he suffered an undisclosed injury prior to camp.
Impact: Sidney Crosby is similarly being held out in the early going, so it's more than likely just the case where the organization wants to keep its two stars fresh for the start of the regular season. Malkin's draft stock shouldn't be affected by the injury, unless news surfaces that the issue is more severe than the Penguins are letting on. The 28-year-old will have to adjust to new coach Mike Johnston's preferred system of using his forwards in pairs rather than lines, but he's still poised to deliver high-end production from the center spot.

News: Crosby will be held out of the early part of training camp after suffering an injury while preparing for camp.
Impact: Evgeni Malkin is similarly being held out in the early going, so it's more than likely just the case where the organization wants to keep its two stars fresh for the start of the regular season. Crosby said last week that he was fully recovered from the wrist injury that bothered him during the postseason, so don't let this concern you too much.

News: Dupuis won't take contact during the initial stages of training camp, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Though it was previously suggested that Dupuis wouldn't face any limitations entering camp, he's just a little bit behind schedule right now. He plans to begin taking contact in about a week, giving him plenty of time to get himself ready for the start of the regular season. The health of Dupuis' knee is less of a concern to fantasy players than in what capacity he might be used this season. New coach Mike Johnston has stated a preference of deploying his skaters in pairs rather than units, suggesting duty with Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby no longer awaits for Dupuis.

News: Letang, who suffered a stroke nearly eight months ago, has been working out without any complications this summer and should be a full participant for the start of training camp, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: In addition to the stroke, Letang was limited to 37 games last season due to a knee injury and an elbow infection. Though he's the ultimate health risk after missing 99 games over the last three seasons, few blueliners possess as much skill offensively as Letang, who still accumulated 11 goals and 11 assists in his limited action. Letang compiled 50 points in his last full season in 2010-11, and that peak could be in reach again if he can avoid any long-term health complications.

News: Penguins coach Mike Johnston said Tuesday that Pouliot (shoulder) likely won't be ready for training camp, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Johnston said that Pouliot, one of the team's top prospects, would likely be able to take part in some skating at the start of camp, but he'll be held out of contact drills until further notice. The former No. 8 overall draft pick accumulated 17 goals and 53 assists over 58 games last season with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks.

News: Maatta could be cleared for physical contact Wednesday or Thursday, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Maatta was ruled out for four-to-six months after undergoing shoulder surgery in May, but there seems to be legitimate optimism that he might beat that timetable and be ready to go for the start of training camp. Even if that materializes, expect the Penguins to limit Maatta's involvement in the early going, with the hope of preparing him for a full slate of minutes for the regular-season opener. The 20-year-old flashed a ton of potential as a rookie last season, accruing nine goals and 20 assists over 78 games.

News: Dupuis (knee) is expected to receive clearance for full contact during training camp, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: The winger looks to be progressing positively from the reconstructive knee surgery that ended his most recent season prematurely, as he was skating on the ice in a red "no-contact" jersey during Wednesday's scrimmage. Dupuis likely has only a few more steps to pass in his rehab program before being cleared for full activity, but it remains undetermined where he'll fit in with the Penguins during the upcoming season. New head coach Mike Johnston prefers to use his forwards as pairs rather than traditional lines, and with the promise of working alongside luminaries Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz no longer guaranteed, Dupuis could be in line for a sharper dropoff in his point total.

News: Kapanen is believed to have broken a finger Aug. 8 while playing for Finland in a junior evaluation camp, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: GM Jim Rutherford "hopes" to have Kapanen on the ice when training camp opens Sept. 19. Any missed time will surely decrease Kapanen's chances of making the team as a rookie.

News: Crosby declared Monday that he is 100 percent healthy after having dealt with a nagging wrist injury for much of the postseason, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Crosby entertained the idea of surgery to correct the wrist issue in the summer, but rest and rehab ultimately proved to be the solution. He's back working out in Pittsburgh in preparation for training camp, and should be poised for another run at the Art Ross Trophy in 2014-15. If Crosby wasn't already being drafted as the top overall fantasy skater, the news that he's fully healthy should do the trick.

News: Kapanen will miss the Penguins' upcoming rookie tournament due to an injury, but should be good to go for training camp, the team's official site reports.
Impact: Kapanen was the team's first-round pick this season and has been billed as one of this season's more NHL-ready draftees. He may spend the 2014-15 season in the AHL, but should get a fair shake at making the Pens in training camp.
