News: Merrill missed the second day of Devils' training camp on Saturday due to a head injury he suffered after colliding with teammate Ruslan Fedotenko during Friday's practice, Rich Chere of NJ.com reports.
Impact: Luckily for Merrill, the Devils' first regular season game isn't until October 9. While head injuries are never a good thing, the promising young defender should have ample time to get healthy before the regular season kicks off.

News: Clowe (concussion) has been cleared for full participation in training camp, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact: Clowe doesn't expect to be thrown into preseason action right away, but the fact that he'll be able to more or less fully participate in training camp has to be a relief for the Devils, who will take a $4.85 million cap hit on the forward for the next three seasons. Still, there's no guarantee Clowe can return to the 40-point per season level, especially while he remains at extreme risk for suffering another debilitating concussion.

News: Clower (concussion) underwent tests for post-concussion syndrome on Tuesday and should be ready for training camp, The Record reports.
Impact: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said the exams were "very positive" and "everything is on track for him to be at camp." Clowe sustained several concussions last season while scattering an uneven 26 points over 43 games, but he expects to be in the lineup on Opening Day. Clowe will see some top-six minutes while in the lineup, but his inconsistency and propensity for injury do not make him the safest pick.

News: Gelinas signed a one-year, one-way contract worth $900,000 on Monday and will report to training camp, The Record reports.
Impact: Getting Gelinas, a restricted free agent, back under contract avoids a holdout by the 23-year-old blue liner, who snagged 29 points in a scattered 60-game campaign as a rookie last year. The majority of his points came before the All-Star break, but he was shuttled between the NHL bench and Albany (AHL) in addition to having his ice time cut severely in some games. Gelinas played several games as a 13th forward and some as a seventh defensemen, seeing only power-play time. While Gelinas is under contract, he is by no means guaranteed a regular role on the team despite his considerable offensive upside. The Devils' coaching staff has regularly made it known that they want Gelinas to improve defensively before giving him a larger role. Monitor his ice time in preseason games, but it's too early to go all-in on Gelinas.

News: Fedotenko will attend the Devils' training camp on a professional tryout basis, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact: The 35-year-old Fedotenko played in the KHL last season for HC Donbass, scoring 17 points (7 goals, 10 assists) in 46 games. At this point in his career, he offers little by way of fantasy upside, since his career high in points (41) came way back in 2005-06 with Tampa Bay. If he does manage to land a roster spot with the Devils, Fedotenko will likely be deployed in a checking-line role.

News: Tootoo will attend the Devils' training camp on a professional tryout basis, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact: While the odds of Tootoo landing a spot on an NHL roster are slim, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello apparently likes what he sees in him. "He's a different dimension type of player," Lamoriello said. "He's exciting, he bangs and hits. It's intriguing. He played against us and he got my attention when he played for Nashville." Even if he does manage to win himself a job this season, it will likely be as a third- or fourth-line agitator, which does not warrant much attention in most fantasy formats. Tootoo racked up just eight points in 53 games playing for Detroit over the past two seasons.

News: Clowe skated at the Devils' informal practice Thursday, noting he was "feeling pretty good" as he continues to recover from a season-ending concussion, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports.
Impact: Clowe hopes to receive clearance to return to the ice for full contact by the start of training camp, but he'll first have to visit a concussion specialist early next week before an official decision is made on his status. The 32-year-old has suffered three or four concussions over the last calendar year, which could make him more vulnerable than most to future head injuries if he returns to action too quickly. While Clowe did produce when he played last season (26 points in 43 games), the health risk he presents may make it worthwhile to steer clear of him on draft day.

News: Carter, an unsigned free agent, will attend training camp.
Impact: Carter did not fetch much interest from the rest of the league and will likely make the team's roster out of camp, as he has been one of their regular defensive forwards since arriving in Newark during the 2012 season.

News: Gelinas, a restricted free agent, remains unsigned as training camp is slated to open next week and could miss the start of training camp.
Impact: The Devils would love to get Gelinas under contract as he has a shot to earn more regular playing time this season provided he can earn the trust of the team's coaching staff. Gelinas exploded early in his rookie season before tapering off, mostly due to a tenuous roster spot and limited ice time while he was in the lineup. With 29 points over 60 games, the bulk of which came early in the season, Gelinas was one of the team's top scorers from the blue line and enters this season as a definite player to watch. 17 of his 29 points came on the power play, but so much of his roster spot will be tied to his ability to shore up his own zone that it can make him a risky pick in some leagues until more is cleared up regarding his contract and role on the squad. Tread carefully, even if he signs.
