The Arizona Coyotes want their fans to stop doing the wave

It hasn't exactly been the best year -- or, to be honest, decade and a half -- for the Arizona Coyotes. The 'Yotes likely won't sniff the playoffs once again this year, as they currently have the second-worst record in the NHL's Western Conference.

Occasionally, though, they'll give their fans something to cheer about. For example, Arizona took down the Ducks at home on Monday night, beating a solid Anaheim team 3-2 in a nail biter.

That was cause for celebration, but the Coyotes' social media team apparently took issue with the way some fans decided to carry out that celebration.

Ah, the wave, a polarizing sporting event custom for years. Some fans, especially those of the younger variety, love the wave. Others, often of the old and grumpy variety, can't stand it. Like almost everything in this world, there are pros and cons to the wave.

For instance, here's a pro: The wave is a very simple custom that often makes children happy. Kids are our nation's future and we should cherish their happiness, make them smile, yada yada yada. But more importantly, when children are happy, the adults in their direct vicinity are usually happier as a result. Adults don't necessarily have to participate in the wave but most will agree that if it keeps children from being little monsters in a public setting, it's a blessing.

With that being said, here's a con: The wave can often be an annoyance or a distraction for fans who just want to watch the action on the field, ice or court. Every time the wave circles back around to a fan's section, they have to deal with people jumping up in front of them and blocking their view. Even if it's for a split second, it can be quite obnoxious.

But regardless of what you think of the practice, one thing should ring true: If you're a sports franchise that has made the playoffs just three times in the last 15 years and you're currently third-worst in attendance, maybe don't criticize the way fans choose to cheer on your team.
