St. Louis Blues Re-Sign Depth Defenseman Chris Butler for Two Years

The St. Louis Blues Have Re-Signed Journeyman Defenseman Chris Butler to a New Two-Year Two-Way Contract.

The St. Louis Blues have announced they have re-signed defenseman Chris Butler to a two-year two-way contract, however, the details remain undisclosed. The 30-year-old defenseman captained the Chicago Wolves last season as well as appearing in 72 games posting five goals, and 21 assists for 26 points along with 46 penalty minutes and a plus 23 rating.

Butler, who has been quite the journeyman was originally a fourth round pick in the 2005 draft by the Buffalo Sabres. He made his debut in 2008-09 with the Sabres playing in 47 games registering six points, he'd also spend the rest of that season with the Portland Pirates of the AHL putting up 12 points in 27 games.

Butler would go on to play two more seasons for the Sabres, this time without a single stop in the AHL playing in a total of 108 games posting three goals, and 27 assists for 30 points along with 48 penalty minutes and a rating of minus seven. In 2011-12 he would go on to join the Calgary Flames where he put up 15 points in 68 games, but in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season he would split time between Karlskrona HK of the Allsvenskan league appearing in only five games before returning to Calgary.

In that season he put up eight points in 44 games and in 2013-14 he'd put up another 16 points but this time in 82 games once again with Calgary. Butler joined the Blues organization in 2014-15 and would play in 33 games posting nine points while spending time with the Chicago Wolves as he would also do for the next two seasons.

Now the best part of a two-way deal attached to an experienced defenseman is that if you need someone to come up quick and fill a spot due to injury or personal issues you can and not have to worry about waivers. So the Blues definitely made a smart choice.
