Puck magically stops just short of the goal

Sometimes fate, or in this case the ice, is just not on your side.
Kessel fired a shot that squeezed through goalie Sergei Bobrovsky's pads and then this happened:
That's right. The puck spun to a stop at the goal line and then was cleared, through the goalie's legs.
Here are a few more angles to watch it again.
The bad luck went on to mean dropped points for the Maple Leafs. The Blue Jackets won 2-1.
Perhaps Kessel could relate to Happy Gilmore following the close call ...
