Philadelphia Flyers Alumni Game Details Announced

The Philadelphia Flyers alumni will play the Pittsburgh Penguins alumni in Philadelphia on January 14

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today there will be a special alumni game between former Flyers and former Pittsburgh Penguins on January 14th at the Wells Fargo center in Philadelphia. The game is part of both teams celebrating their 50th season in the NHL.

Along with date announcement, the Flyers released a name of confirmed participants in the game. The Flyers will have players spanning eras from the 60s through to recent retiree Simon Gagne.

More players may be added to the rosters closer to the game date.

The current Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins will also play an outdoor game in Pittsburgh 6 weeks later on February 25.

There’s not much room for more defensemen, but I wouldn’t mind seeing personal favorites like Mikael Renberg and Mark Recchi added. I also like seeing more recent retirees for bit quicker pace than men ~70 years old can manage.

The Penguins have not yet announced any players that will participate. Reports claim the Penguins have also been in the NHL since 1967, but I cannot personally confirm that any player of note actually played for them before the late 80s and Mario Lemieux.

It’s also a good thing these games do not need to provide alumni fans, because I’m not sure there were actually any Penguins fans pre-Lemieux.
