Cal Clutterbuck crushed Justin Williams with a devastating open-ice hit

Published Dec. 9, 2016 12:22 p.m. ET

Cal Clutterbuck may want to keep his phone handy, he'll probably be receiving a call from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

The Islanders forward delivered a brutal open-ice hit on the Capitals' Justin Williams during Thursday's game in Washington. Clutterbuck leveled Williams with what was deemed a clean hit on the ice (no penalty was called) but  looked to be a late, high hit in the neutral zone. The Isles veteran appeared to leave his feet before delivering the hit.

Clutterbuck himself may have even conceded that it was a bad hit, as it looks like he tried to apologize to Williams in the immediate aftermath. Regardless, the collision left Williams a little dazed but he was eventually able to gather his wits and rejoin play.
