FOXSports.com: What do you think of all the player movement this summer? Daryl Reaugh: It's pretty evident what's going on. By far, the most interesting thing has been the situation with leaving Anaheim, and then they turn around and sign . That's had the highest level of interest so far. But it seems like monetary concerns are at the root of everything that goes on now. It's been a part of things for a while, but now it's even gone into the free-agent portion of things. And everybody seems to be signing one-year contracts for the most part. FOXSports.com: It definitely seems like the labor uncertainty has played a big role this summer. DR: Oh, definitely. Nobody wants to get locked into a bunch of long-term contracts not knowing what they'll be penalized on the other side of what comes out of this labor bargaining. So everybody's being really cautious. It's almost like a high-stakes game of poker. All the "big-dog" teams sat and said the right things at the draft and then went out and anted up, with Detroit signing (Derian) Hatcher and then Colorado signing Kariya and and Philadelphia signing everyone they had to sign. So there are some top-end teams who have stayed in the game, so to speak, and others who may be bluffing, I don't know. But that's what it seems like to me. FOXSports.com: Were you surprised to see Anaheim go after Fedorov? DR: No, because there's some history in that organization. Their GM, Bryan Murray, was in Detroit for a while. It's a little bit surprising, I guess. But they've never had a dynamic, world-class, game-breaking centerman there in his prime. You can say they had , but they had at 39 or whatever, and he still helped them. To me, I've always felt if you can build and dominate in the middle of the ice, with a good center, some big defensemen like , and a goaltender, those are the good teams. They obviously have a great young goaltender (Jean-Sebastien Giguere), their defense seems to be getting better by the quarter, not even by the season, and now they have a big-minute, big-point-producing international star who can play the game in the middle. I thought it was a great move. Bryan Murray's done a great job there. FOXSports.com: Do the additions of Kariya and Selanne instantly give the what they need to go all the way? DR: Well, I always think that these young goaltenders, when given a chance, are going to be able to show what they can do. They've got two good, young ones in and . Unless they get another goaltender, Aebischer's going to find out what he's all about in a bigger role. And Sauve's going to get an opportunity, and everybody seems to be high on him. They might be looking at it like they've got so much firepower, if they can hold the other team to three goals, they'll score four more times than not. Especially with those top two lines. They've got the most firepower in the league now, no question about that. I think losing is going to hurt them a little, though. Any time you lose those steady, core defensemen it hurts. And they had to give up in that deal for to get a little tougher. They're scary skilled up front and they're really tough. You start screwing around with their skill, and you're going to get pushed around. The only real glaring weakness they have is established goaltending. I suspect if things aren't working out the way they want in net, they'll rectify that situation, too. FOXSports.com: I guess we can be seeing a lot of 7-5 type games with them this year. DR: Hey, there's nothing wrong with that. If the young guys show the demeanor that they can hang in there with real crummy stats, with winning as the be-all, end-all, they might be able to do it that way. This league's going to still be centered around goaltending. They may have to talk Patrick into coming out of retirement or something. FOXSports.com: What do you think of the moves made so far in Dallas? DR: In a lot of ways, Dallas is trying to do two things at once. I think GM Doug Armstrong has done a good job of balancing the two. They want to make sure they're at least in a position to compete on the other side of this (possible work stoppage), instead of being in a position where they'll just get crushed for having too much payroll or not enough lateral mobility when it comes to players. They still have five or six world-class players, and maybe the best player in the league in Modano, so it's not like they're all of a sudden an expansion team. But they're going to miss , I think everybody understands that. It's going to be a very different Dallas team this year not having both and Hatcher on the back end. In the long run, those may be moves, when you look back, that were necessary to make sure that they're capable of staying in the upper echelon of the league on the other side, instead of being a dinosaur, which was the fear. If they just kept spending their brains out, trying to win that way, on the other side of this thing, the cupboards would be bare. Then they'd struggle for a decade. Doug's got a lot of balls in the air right now. I think for the most part, he's done a great job. FOXSports.com: Where do you think will end up? DR: I don't know. That'll be interesting. He might end up in training camp with Detroit. You get into training camp, and then another team has an injury, and then all of a sudden there's a better market for . Obviously, right now it's a buyer's market. They know they've got two $8 million goalies there. The usual names come out there, the and whoever else, but they're really not in a great position to move him. The good thing about it, from my understanding, is that he's got two years left on that contract. I hate saying this, but everybody keeps talking this way, that's essentially a one-year contract, because they won't play the next year. That's the "sky is falling" view of things. But that's reality. But there are teams that can use a netminder, and the are probably in the front of that line. Colorado, too, but I don't know how Detroit would allow Curtis to go to that team. It's too close to home. But there are funny deals nowadays. I never thought players would get dealt within the division, and then you had Selanne bouncing all over the Pacific. So maybe there isn't that fear of trading so close to home as there once was. Daryl Reaugh is the color analyst for the Dallas on Fox Sports Net Southwest.
