PRINCE OF PUCKS: Most big names staying put

With the March 11 trade deadline mere days away, and at great risk to my already questionable reputation, I present my peerless predictions for deadline day. While may have been dealt, forget about or being traded. Not gonna happen, no way, no how. The want to build around Iginla in hopes of putting seven years of missed postseasons behind them. The are very pleased with Palffy's performance in the second half and are already talking about re-signing him to a new deal, plus Ziggy's hinting at accepting less money to remain in Tinseltown. Regarding Phoenix captain , if he really wanted to play for a Cup contender, and knowing the defending champion Detroit wanted him, don't you think he'd have waived that no-trade clause by now? The most likely guys to move? Buffalo's and San Jose's are two obvious choices. Zhitnik's salary is tied with 's as tops on the cash-strapped , so figure he'll be on his way by the deadline. Marchment, meanwhile, is an unrestricted free agent this summer, whom the probably won't re-sign. Another guy who could finally be on the move is N.Y. forward . There's talk that Isles GM Mike Milbury is running out of patience waiting for Isbister to blossom into the next big power forward. Florida head coach Mike Keenan dropped hints he'd like a player like Isbister on his roster, and these two clubs have a notable trade history, but don't expect the to part with forward , Isles fans. The may not part with Iginla or , but don't rule out one of the following getting dealt: Center , forward or defenseman . In order to build around Iginla, and despite ownership promises of a $3 million raise in salary next season, the will have to move someone to free up room on the payroll. If the genuinely want to unload goaltender , they'll have to lower their asking price, particularly the one they're rumored to have made to the St. Louis . Apparently, the want promising defenseman Barrett Jackman as part of the deal. GM Larry Pleau would love to land Burke, but not at that price. It's possible the cash-strapped Pittsburgh could move goalie , winger or by deadline day. However, I'm betting on winger as the next Penguin to go. He hasn't impressed GM Craig Patrick with his play this season, and Nieminen's rumored desire to play for a playoff contender hasn't helped either. Patrick claims he's received no inquiries for the winger, but it was only two years ago Nieminen caught everyone's eye with his energetic performance during the Colorado 's Cup run in 2001. There's bound to be some interest in him from a playoff club seeking affordable young talent. Pop quiz, Montreal fans! I know you'd like GM Andre Savard to dump the salaries of veterans like , , , and . Now ask yourselves this question: What general manager out there is crazy/stupid enough to take these underachievers off your hands? Toronto GM Pat Quinn made the deal for , but he will also add depth to his blueline for the postseason. Best guess? Either Buffalo's Zhitnik or Carolina's . Who will be deadline-day sellers? The for sure. The , too, especially if they decide not to re-sign winger . The , if they fall further out of playoff contention. Ditto the , who, like the Habs, want to dump the salaries of some aging veterans. Keep an eye on the and , although they'll probably move only one player each. The Carolina want to turn the page on this horrible season and are known to have Wesley, forward and goalie available. Who will be buyers? The Leafs and are believed in play, but don't expect blockbusters involving these clubs. The Detroit definitely want to bolster their blueline, as do the Tampa Bay . The were believed to be seeking goaltending help, but if rookie continues his strong play of late, GM Larry Pleau could change his mind. The Ottawa would like to add a gritty winger to their roster. Who'll stand pat? Despite injuries to goalie and winger , the Dallas have plenty of depth to cover these absences. As long as both guys can be ready for the playoffs, there should be no reason for the to deal. Colorado GM Pierre Lacroix is known for his blockbuster trades at this time of year, but this could be the season he opts out. The N.Y. are in playoff contention, so a major move on their part seems unlikely. The Vancouver were believed seeking second-line help, but they don't want to part with young players to get it, so don't expect much movement from them. Who's the wild-card team? The New Jersey . The feeling in the camp is GM Lou Lamoriello will do something to hopefully boost his team's struggling offense. "Lou Lam" is no stranger to making surprising deadline deals, as witnessed by his acquisitions of and in 2000 and and last year. There's been plenty of speculation in the New York media he's interested in of the , of the and of the . At home in Prince Edward , Canada, he's known as Lyle Richardson. But around these parts, he's known as Spector, FOXSports.com's Prince of Pucks. Check in with Spector for the latest NHL rumors from around the league and buy his book.
