Toronto center Tim Brent is considered one of the OHL's top young prospects for the 2002 NHL Draft in Toronto. Hockey's Future had the chance recently to sit down with Brent and ask him a few questions. Hockey's Future: Well, the first thing I wanted to ask you was to describe what type of player you are and, if you can, compare yourself to an NHL player. Tim Brent: I try to play like Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings. I think he's one of the best all-around players in the National Hockey League. He plays both ends of the ice, great on faceoffs. He's a guy that you could put on the power play or the penalty kill and that's the kind of player that I'm trying to be. I think to describe myself, I'd have to say I'm a two-way player, who's pretty good at playing both ends of the ice and power play and penalty kill. Hockey's Future: Who has had the biggest influence on your career thus far?
NAME: Tim Brent
TEAM: Toronto St. Michael's Majors
POSITION: Center
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-foot-11/177 lbs.
BIRTHDATE/PLACE: 3-10-84/ Cambridge, Ontario
DRAFT STATUS: Eligible for 2002 NHL Entry Draft
THE VITALS:
  • Brent is currently in his second full season with the Majors after being drafted 2nd overall in the 2000 OHL Draft
  • He is rated among the top North American prospects for the 2002 NHL draft. Central Scouting rated him 36th among North American skaters
  • He finished ninth in team scoring last season with nine goals and 28 points
  • TB: Definitely my parents. My dad and my mom have been big influences since I've been small, taking me to the rink at six in the morning. My dad pushing me some days when you're younger and you don't want to go to practice. My dad kind of helped out with that and same with my mom. They tried to push me but didn't push me too far and I think that's really important for younger kids. A lot of the time their parents are trying to live their dreams through their kids and that's was definitely not the case with me. My parents just wanted me to be the best I could be. Hockey's Future: Now, concerning this year's draft, what went through you mind when the draft lists come out and your name was on them? TB: It definitely kind of puts things in perspective. It's definitely cool, but at the same time it's only the first list, you can't take it for granted that you're going to get drafted. It was definitely a thrill and it kind of made me realize that this is my draft year and it's going to be in the back of my mind. I think it's important that you focus on playing your game, not to worry about what the scouts are thinking. Hockey's Future: With players like Mark Popovic and Peter Budaj having already gone through the draft before, do you go to them for advice? TB: Yeah, I'm pretty fortunate we have like eight drafted players on the team this year and it's definitely a lot easier when you're talking to those guys to know exactly what's going on. My agent actually took me down to the draft last year so I could get a feel for it and the biggest thing I learned was that you're never safe. There's a lot of surprises. I know with Mark everybody thought he was going to be a first-round pick and he ended up going high in the second round, which is great, but he did go in the second round. It's kind of, I don't want to say a crapshoot, but you don't really know what's going to go on until that actual day. Hockey's Future: The Majors coaching staff (Dave Cameron and Bob Jones) both have professional hockey experience. How have they helped you this year? TB: Both Coach Cameron and Coach Jones have helped a lot both with my skill development and just learning the game a lot. Both of them have played professional hockey so they know the game inside and out. It's just a great experience to play for those guys cause they know so much. Hockey's Future: Lastly, you're in your second season with the Majors this year. How have the two seasons helped you prepare for the draft this year? TB: Well, it was definitely a good thing to play underage, I think, for me last year. I came in a lot more comfortable this year. A lot more confidence actually after playing in the under-18 tournament during the summer gave me a lot of confidence and kind of jump started my season this year, so I think it was pretty key for me to be playing, this being my second year in the OHL.
