FISCHLER: Sather best possible Rangers leader

Glen Sather — Coach, 2003-2004! In the end, this was the only way to go. Why? "I went through the process," Sather explained during an early evening conference call, "and then when it was finished, I said maybe I was the person who had to do the job." I immediately asked Sather how difficult the decision was and he replied, "It was not that tough because I always enjoyed coaching." Who was better out there? Well Larry Robinson seemed to be the best of the contenders but he didn't want the job. Scotty Bowman never was a legitimate candidate. What about Mike Keenan? Florida's compensation demands would have been much too high. "What I did," Sather reiterated, "was the logical choice at this time." The remaining candidates — Ted Nolan, Peter Laviolette, et. al. — never had a shot. I said from the get-go that it would be Sather, but he was asked whether he could reveal the names of anybody else with whom he had talked and he emphatically said no. In the end it was the case of unfinished business and the fact that the missed the playoffs after Sather had replaced Bryan Trottier. "I went into the coaching job hoping that we would make the playoffs," Sather asserted. "I felt I left the job incomplete and now I want to complete." Intensely serious throughout the conference call, Sather was questioned about the possibility of being overworked doing the managing and coaching simultaneously. "I have Don Maloney and a lot of other people to help me with the job," Sather insisted. He also surprised some by suggesting that assistant coaches Terry O'Reilly and Jim Schoenfeld would both be back next season. "They are all under contract," Sather insisted. "I see no reason to make changes." When I asked Sather directly what kind of hockey we would see, he briefly lightened up and replied, "How about winning!" When I pressed him about going to a 'fire wagon' style of hockey such as his high-speed Edmonton successfully used in the 1980s, Sather pointed out that the were not doing that a lot of the time, contrary to the general view. Reflecting on the defensive mistakes in the homestretch, Sather simply declared, "We made a lot of poor decisions and we're going to try to correct that stuff." The general manager also was asked whether he had talked to and said that he had not spoken to him and did not know when he would hear from him. The fact that of Anaheim might be available now as a free agent inspired this response from Sather: "There are a lot of guys out there I like. My decisions are going to be dictated by how much they cost." When it was suggested to Glen that Dominik Hasek's return might make available, Sather said, "I don't think so," to the idea of replacing in the nets. He also pointed out it was difficult to estimate what kind of contracts a lot of the free agents would require. He also denied that he was going to buy out the contract of , as was reported by Canadian sources. Unlike his bench predecessor, Bryan Trottier, Slats should hit the ice skating if not hitting the ground running. There will be no breaking-in period where he has to acclimatize himself to his lineup. Nor does he have to wonder — and worry — about whether another canidate would meld with the men in blue. With a league-wide lockout a strong possibility in October 2004, Sather has one season to right the floundering ship. The chances of him doing so are better than many believe. He knows his roster inside out. Right off the stick, his should be ten points better than last year, comparing their October-November 2002 record with what I expect will be their mark next fall. In the end this was the best possible decision because Sather is the best possible leader for this hockey club.
