Rafalski was looking for just under $4 million, while the team had countered with an offer of $2.8 million. The deal was reportedly worth $3.1 million, which is just a $100,000 raise from last year. The 30-year-old Rafalski had six goals and 30 assists in 69 games for the Devils last season. For his career, he has 30 goals and 177 assists in five seasons. The news of Rafalski's signing comes just after the Devils lost an arbitration case with center Scott Gomez, who almost tripled his salary. The Devils also signed eight free agents on Friday, including goaltenders Ari Ahonen and Scott Clemmensen, defensemen Bobby Allen, Ray Schultz and Steven Spencer and forwards Brett Clouthier, Ryan Murphy and Pascal Rheaume.
