Canadiens-Flyers Preview

With the Montreal Canadiens visiting, the Philadelphia Flyers have more than one home winning streak to uphold.

The Flyers look to extend a nine-game home streak overall and a nine-game run there against the Canadiens on Wednesday night.

Philadelphia (22-17-4) completed a six-game road trip Tuesday at New Jersey with a 3-2 overtime win. The Flyers won five of six on the trip and have won six of seven overall to climb into the middle of the Eastern Conference postseason picture.

Another victory over Montreal would give Philadelphia its first 10-game home win streak since an 11-game run Oct. 27-Dec. 5, 2003.

"I think just confidence," Brayden Schenn said of the difference between the Flyers now and at the beginning of the season. "I said before, believing in one another, believing in each other and trusting the system."

Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell scored in regulation while Schenn scored in overtime after the Flyers let a 2-1 lead slip away in the final minute of regulation. All three have scored in consecutive games.

Schenn also had an assist and has seven points in his last five while Hartnell has an eight-game point streak. Giroux has 19 points in his last 13 games and five points in his last three against the Canadiens.

"I thought Giroux played an outstanding game, from start to finish," Flyers coach Craig Berube said. "I thought he was physical, competed and did everything possible out there."

The recent hot streak wasn't enough to land him a spot on Canada's Olympic roster, which was announced Tuesday.

"Right now I'm just worried about the Flyers and keep winning games," Giroux said.

No. 1 goaltender Steve Mason got the night off against the Devils but has won six of his last seven starts. He's 2-0-0 in his career against the Canadiens with a 1.92 goals-against average after beating them 2-1 on Dec. 12 in Philadelphia.

Montreal (25-14-5) is 2-0-2 in its last four games and looking for back-to-back wins after a 2-1 home victory over Florida on Monday.

Carey Price, who was named to Team Canada along with teammate P.K. Subban, made 16 third-period saves to preserve the lead. He was in need of a good outing after posting a 4.23 goals-against average and .880 save percentage in his previous three games.

"The Panthers gave a big push in the third," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. "Again, Carey Price was solid. He shut the door. There was no way in his mind the Panthers would score another against him. I really liked his reaction. He played really well. He was like a closer in baseball."

Price is 1-5-0 with a 3.58 GAA against the Flyers since Nov. 25, 2011, the one win coming on Oct. 5 of this season. He's lost his last six starts in Philadelphia.

David Desharnais scored a first-period goal to give Montreal its first lead Monday, while Brian Gionta scored for the second straight game to take the lead back in the second.

Desharnais has six points in his last four games while Max Pacioretty, who assisted on his goal, has seven in four contests. Pacioretty also has six points in his last four games against the Flyers.

Goals have been tough to come by in Philadelphia for the Canadiens in recent years. They've been outscored 35-12 during their nine-game skid there, which includes three losses in the 2009-10 conference finals.

The teams have split two meetings this season with each winning at home.
