News: Whitney announced his retirement from the NHL on Wednesday, ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reports.
Impact: Whitney spent 23 years in the NHL, with many of his most effective seasons coming in the twilight of his career. He tallied a career-best 83 points with the Hurricanes in 2006-07 and registered 77 points in 2011-12 with the Coyotes, when he was 39 years old. All told, he supplied 1,064 points over 1,330 regular season games spent with the Sharks, Oilers, Panthers, Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Hurricanes, Coyotes, and Stars.
