News: Practicing with the team for the first time since a torn quad ended his season in October of last year, Freeney says his leg now feels "great" and that he is cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact: The Bolts need to improve their pass rush and a healthy Freeney is a huge key, both through his individual contributions and also by helping to mentor rookie Jerry Attaochu. San Diego plans to rotate Freeney and Attaochu at one outside linebacker spot and will employ a similar approach with Jarret Johnson and Melvin Ingram on the other side. A liberal rotation should keep all of those guys fresh and will hopefully help Freeney stay on the field for most or all of his 13th season.

News: As expected, Johnson is being used in a variety of formations as both a blocking tight end and a fullback so far in training camp, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact: The early word is the Johnson looks fluid and comfortable no matter where the Bolts line him up. He is expected to really help the team in short yardage and red zone situations, though he is not likely to actually touch the ball too much.

News: Verrett is in the mix for punt and kick return duties, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact: Verrett started campaigning for a role on kick and punt returns during his first conversation with head coach Mike McCoy on draft day, but he hasn't returned kicks regularly since his days at Santa Rosa Junior College in 2010. Still, the Bolts say that the return duties are up for grabs, and Verrett was one of four players returning kicks during the first practices of camp. The incumbent, Eddie Royal, is still expected to win the job, but a solid preseason from Verrett could change that.

News: Brown was an observer during Chargers' practice Friday, and was wearing a thick wrap on his calf, the Union-Tribune's Tom Krasovic reports.
Impact: It's not clear if Brown has a legitimate injury or not, but it's something to keep an eye on in the short term. He will be competing for the No. 2 receiver spot during training camp.

News: Gates joined his San Diego Chargers teammates for the first practice of training camp a day after his 22-year-old sister died after battling lupus for three years.
Impact: Gates lauded coach Mike McCoy for letting him deal with his sister's illness. Last season, Gates would often fly to Detroit after road games to be with his sister.

News: Coming off of a career year, Mathews remains the primary back in San Diego but could see fierce competition from Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown for touches, the Chargers' Official website reports.
Impact: It will be interesting to see how the coaches use each of their three running backs this year as they all appear worthy of significant playing time, but there are only so many balls go around. The early guess is that Woodhead will primarily serve as the third-down / pass formation back and Brown will liberally spot Mathews whenever he needs a breather.

Impact: Clary was placed on the PUP list while he recovers from offseason hip surgery.

News: Mouton (knee) was waived after failing a physical, the Chargers' Official website reports.
Impact: A second-round pick in 2011, Mouton appeared in three games the last three seasons. He missed the entire 2011 (shoulder) and 2013 (knee) seasons due to injuries.

News: The San Diego Chargers agreed to a two-year contract extension with running back Danny Woodhead. Woodhead signed a two-year contract when he joined the Chargers as an unrestricted free agent from New England in March 2013. His new contract runs through the 2016 season.
Impact: Woodhead is coming off a career year. He had career highs of 76 catches (second on the team), 605 yards and six touchdowns. He ranked first among all running backs in touchdown catches and ranked second in receptions and yards receiving.

News: Woodhead signed a two-year contract extension with the Chargers on Tuesday, NFL.com reports.
Impact: Woodhead proved to be a seamless fit in the running back committee with Ryan Mathews and Ronnie Brown last season, becoming quarterback Philip Rivers' favorite receiving option out of the backfield. The 29-year-old set career-highs with 76 receptions, six touchdowns and 1,296 all-purpose yards. Woodhead will carry most of his interest in PPR leagues in 2014, but considering the high volume of touches he'll see when combining his carries and receptions, he's worth owning in just about any format.

News: The San Diego Chargers have released outside linebacker Larry English, a former first-round pick.
Impact: San Diego parted ways with English on Tuesday. He was limited to nine games last year, including five starts in place of Dwight Freeney, because of a pectoral injury he had after sacking Peyton Manning in a loss to Denver. The Chargers drafted him 16th overall in 2009 and he played in all 16 games as a rookie. He played in just 13 games over the next two years because of foot injuries. English has 11 career sacks in 52 games, nine starts, over his five-year career.

News: English was released by the Chargers on Tuesday, the team's official website reports.
Impact: English was selected 16th overall out of Northern Illinois in the 2009 NFL Draft, but has since failed to live up to his draft slotting, as he's only posted 82 tackles and 11 sacks during five professional seasons. To be fair, the 28-year-old has battled injuries, forcing him to miss 28 games over his career. Nonetheless, English was made expendable after the Chargers spent this year's second-round choice on pass rush specialist Jeremiah Attaochu. Look for English to catch on elsewhere before the regular season starts and provide depth at linebacker wherever he lands.
